What: Should You Consider Genetic Testing?

Please join Brian A. Allen, M.S. Genetic Counselor with Myriad Genetic Laboratories as he discusses who should consider having a genetic test; what to do with the test results, informed consent and your confidentiality rights.

Knowing that you have inherited a mutation in a gene causing an increased risk for specific cancers can provide valuable information potentially helping a person determine their chance of developing a cancer. With specific genetic testing results a person may be armed with the right information to diagnose a malignant cancer early enough to allow successful treatment.

Weight-Loss Surgery Support Group “New Beginnings”

Information and support group for people who have had or
are considering weight-loss surgery. Friends and family are welcome.

* Pre-operative patients considering Bariatric surgery, and
Post-operative patients who have had Bariatric surgery,
meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
(in December, the group will meet on the 18th due to the
Christmas Holiday)

* Post-operative patients meet on the 2nd Saturday of each
month 10:00 am to 11:30 am.

New Patient Orientation Class - July 2008

An orientation class for new cancer patients receiving
treatment at the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Led by an
interdisciplinary team, this class provides information on
how to navigate the Cancer Center journey, what services
are available and how to access these services. Classes
are open to Cancer Center patients and their family or
caregivers.

Stress Reduction: The Practice of Mindfulness - July 2008

Mindfulness teaches us to be present in the moment
with whatever is happening in our lives. Through
this simple yet powerful practice, we can learn
how to transform our ability to cope with the stress
of everyday life, the stress of illness and begin to
cultivate mental balance, generosity and compassion
towards ourselves and others.

This experiential 8-week series includes detailed
instruction in body/mind relaxation techniques,
mindfulness meditation, gentle yoga and how to work
more skillfully with the challenges of daily life.

Receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer or having a recurrence can be extremely stressful. Not only may you feel confused, vulnerable and uninformed, you may also feel very much alone. The Breast Cancer Support Group meets twice a month to provide not only emotional support but serves as a safe place for women to talk about their fears, their treatment successes, and relationships--or just to listen to other women who are living with breast cancer.

Chemical Dependency Workshops - February 2008

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s MPI Chemical Dependency Treatment Services
workshops are for anyone with an interest in alcohol or drug abuse, whether it’s for themselves, their patients, family members or friends. Everyone is welcome to attend our free chemical dependency workshops held each Saturday. You will leave with a better understanding of the illness of chemical dependency and be prepared to help yourself or someone you care about move toward recovery.

Workshop topics rotate each week: The Disease of Chemical Dependency; The Family Illness; Family Intervention; Treatment and Recovery Issues.

When: Every Saturday except July 5, November 22 and December 23.

Alta Bates Summit Offers Free Eating Disorders Seminar - February 28, 2008

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s Eating Disorders Program - Neal Anzai, MD, Medical Director of the Adolescent Behavioral Health and Eating Disorder programs.

“Starvation and Re-Feeding” An understanding of how semi-starvation contributes to the onset of Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa and implications for recovery.

10 million females and 1 million males in the U.S. are battling Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. In recognition of National Eating Disorders Awareness Day, hundreds of programs across the country will offer education and support to those suffering from eating disorders and their loved ones who suffer along with them. Alta Bates Summit Medical Center's Comprehensive Eating Disorder Program is offering a free Educational Seminar to correct some common misperceptions about the onset and recovery from Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa in both adolescents and adults. (Unfortunately, due to the specialized nature of Eating Disorder treatment, Binge-Eating Disorder and Obesity will not be covered in this talk.)

Free eating disorder information will be available for adolescents and adults.
