Tobacco-Free Policy in 2008



To protect the health of our patients, employees and visitors, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is tobacco-free effective January 1, 2008.

Our new policy prohibits smoking and use of tobacco products on Alta Bates Summit property, including all:

  • Indoor areas
  • Outdoor areas
  • Balconies
  • Decks
  • Gardens
  • Parking garages
  • Vehicles parked on Alta Bates Summit property

    In addition, the Cities of Oakland and Berkeley also outlaw smoking in certain areas:

    Oakland
  • Within 25 feet of entryways, exits, and intake vents to public buildings
  • Bus stops
  • Parks
  • Outdoor dining areas
  • ATM lines
  • Municipal golf courses

    Berkeley
  • Within 50 feet of all hospitals and clinics
  • Within 25 feet of entryways, exits, operational windows, intake vents to public buildings, and bus stops
  • Designated "commercial area" sidewalks on Shattuck, Telegraph, and College Avenues, among others
  • Parks, athletic fields, hiking trails, and bike paths
  • ATMs, ticket lines, and cab stands
